UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Summit Highlights Economic Growth and Free Zones Opportunities

Accra, September 2026

The UK-Ghana Trade and Investment Summit was held on 24 September 2026 in Accra under the theme, “A Decade of Trust, A Future Always On: Scaling the UK-Ghana Growth Partnership.” The event brought together business leaders, investors, government representatives and key stakeholders from the United Kingdom (UK) and Ghana to strengthen economic and investment cooperation between the two countries, exchange perspectives and build fruitful connections.

Delivering the keynote address, the Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Sampson Ahi, highlighted Ghana’s economic performance, noting 6% GDP growth in 2025 and 6.4% growth in the first quarter of 2026, supported strongly by the industry and services sectors. He also referenced Ghana’s position as the eighth-largest economy in Africa, noting that these indicators demonstrate the country’s credibility, stability and readiness for investment.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Operations) of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu, delivered a presentation titled “Understanding the Free Zones Concept,” providing an overview of the Ghana Free Zones Scheme and practical insights into how businesses can leverage the Scheme to strengthen their export potential.

Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu noted that the Ghana Free Zones Scheme offers some of the most attractive incentives in the sub-region. He explained that the entire country has been designated as a Free Zone, providing Free Zones Enterprises (FZEs) and prospective investors with the opportunity to establish operations in any part of Ghana while benefiting from the incentives provided under the Ghana Free Zones Act.

The Trade and Investment Summit also featured a fireside chat, during which Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu participated as a panelist. The discussion focused on how Ghana could position itself as a gateway to the wider African market, with the panel addressing questions on trade, investment and market access.

Other notable speakers included H.E. Mrs. Zita Benson, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland; Mr. Alistair Long, UK HM Trade Commissioner for Africa; and Mr. John Addo Kuffuor, Vice Chairman of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC).
