Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) is a major Ghanaian aluminium smelting and manufacturing company based in Tema, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. The company was established in 1967 as a cornerstone of Ghana’s industrialisation strategy and is now wholly owned by the Government of Ghana through the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC). Its headquarters and smelting facilities are located in Tema’s Heavy Industrial Area, where it continues to play a central role in the development of the country’s aluminium sector.
VALCO’s core operations focus on smelting aluminium from imported alumina to produce primary aluminium products such as sows, pigs, rolling ingots, and extrusion billets. These products supply both the local manufacturing market (including companies like Aluworks Limited) and regional and international buyers. Although the plant has faced operational challenges over the years and historically operated below its design capacity, the company remains a key industrial asset and a strategic driver of Ghana’s efforts toward value‑added production in the aluminium value chain.
In recent years, VALCO has embarked on modernisation and capacity expansion plans under Ghana’s Integrated Aluminium Industry (IAI) strategy. These initiatives aim to increase operational efficiency, revive additional smelting cells, and expand production capacity beyond current levels, creating thousands of jobs and generating significant revenue contributions to the Ghanaian economy. The company’s ongoing transformation efforts are part of broader government plans to unlock greater value from Ghana’s abundant bauxite reserves and grow the aluminium sector for long‑term national industrial benefit.
