Accra, March 2026
A delegation from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, led by its Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) to solicit support and explore partnership opportunities for the Fund. The delegation was received by the Chief Executive Officer of GFZA, Dr. Mary Awusi, together with a member of the Board, Stella N. A. Dartey.

During the meeting, Madam Obuobia delivered a detailed presentation on the operations of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. She explained that the Fund was established on 1st September 2025 by John Dramani Mahama with a four-point mandate: to support research into non-communicable diseases; to build healthcare infrastructure and procure essential medical equipment; to train and invest in medical personnel; and to provide free treatment for patients enrolled under the scheme.
Speaking on the purpose of her visit, Madam Obuobia indicated that although the Fund receives support from 20% of the National Health Insurance budget, the high cost of treating chronic non-communicable diseases makes it necessary for companies, organisations and individuals to partner with the Fund through donations and contributions.

She therefore appealed to the CEO of GFZA to support President Mahama’s vision of ensuring that the Fund provides care and relief to vulnerable Ghanaians.
In her remarks, the CEO of GFZA commended President John Dramani Mahama for the visionary initiative aimed at easing the financial burden of chronic disease treatment and reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses for Ghanaians. She further praised the foresight and compassion behind the initiative, noting that it promotes care, inclusion and support for the well-being of all citizens.
Dr. Awusi emphasised that the Ghana Free Zones Authority considers it important to support such a noble cause. As a key public institution responsible for promoting investment, export-led industrialisation, and economic growth, GFZA also recognises its responsibility to contribute to the broader well-being of society. Supporting the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, she noted, reflects the Authority’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and initiatives that improve the lives of Ghanaians beyond economic development.
In support of the initiative, the CEO presented a cheque of GH₵300,000.00 to the Fund. Presenting the cheque to Madam Obuobia, Dr. Awusi expressed her hope that the gesture would inspire stronger collaboration among institutions, partners, and citizens in pursuit of sustainable national development

In her acceptance remarks, the Administrator of the Fund expressed profound gratitude to GFZA for its generous and unconditional support. She commended the Authority for its dedication to national development and expressed her desire to deepen collaboration with GFZA as well as Free Zone Enterprises.
Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Finance and Administration, Mr. Hamidu Sibiri Musah, as well as Directors, Senior Managers, and staff of the Authority.
