GFZA CEO Attends Commissioning of B5 Plus Steel Manufacturing Plant

Larkpleku Village, February 2026

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Dr. Mary Awusi, on Friday, 20th February 2026, attended the commissioning of the Steel Ball Mill and Section Mill (SBMS) Manufacturing Plant of B5 Plus Ltd. The event was held at Larkpleku in Prampram within the Ningo-Prampram area and was commissioned by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama. It was attended by traditional rulers, industry stakeholders, government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his keynote address, President Mahama stressed that building a strong domestic steel industry is critical to Ghana’s infrastructure ambitions and regional economic leadership. He also highlighted the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, which is driving major investments in roads and highways, railway modernization, bridges and interchanges, energy transmission lines, affordable housing, and industrial parks.

He emphasized that all these developments depend heavily on iron and steel. Underscoring the direct link between infrastructure development and industrial strategy, he stated that “this is how infrastructure becomes industrial strategy.” He further noted that the government’s 24-Hour Economy Programme is particularly relevant for energy-intensive industries such as steel manufacturing, as it supports continuous production and improved industrial efficiency.

In her address, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, described the commissioning of the plant’s Phase II expansion as a major milestone in Ghana’s industrial transformation. She noted that the Ningo-Prampram enclave is steadily emerging as a vibrant hub for industrial development.

The Minister explained that the government’s Feed the Industry Programme is designed to prioritize locally available raw materials, particularly scrap metals, for domestic processing rather than export in raw form. She stated that the decision to ban the export of certain scrap materials is already strengthening local manufacturing capacity by redirecting critical inputs to industry.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, called for a dedicated and reliable power supply to support industrial growth within the enclave.

The commissioning of the SBMS plant is expected to significantly boost local steel manufacturing capacity, create employment opportunities, and support Ghana’s broader industrialization agenda.

The Chief Executive Officer was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Administration and Finance, Mr. Musah Sibiri Hamidu, along with Directors and officers of the Authority.
