The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) on Thursday, 20 August 2026, hosted a Joint Technical Sub-Committee meeting involving the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly and the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly to review the Draft Local Plan for the proposed Afienya Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The meeting, held at the GFZA Head Office in Cantonments, Accra, brought together district planning officers, engineers, physical planning officers and environmental health officers from the two assemblies. Representatives from the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), Lands Commission, Environmental Protection Authority, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Water Company Limited, Ghana Hydrological Services Agency, Department of Urban Roads and the National Disaster Management Organization also participated.
The engagement forms part of the GFZA’s efforts to develop its newly acquired 1,238-acre site at Afienya into a modern SEZ. To ensure the orderly and sustainable development of the area, the GFZA engaged LUSPA to draft a Local Plan to guide land use, infrastructure development, and the overall spatial management of the proposed SEZ.
In his opening remarks, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations at the GFZA, Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu, expressed appreciation to the participating institutions for their contributions. He particularly commended LUSPA for its commitment and technical expertise in preparing the Draft Local Plan. He further highlighted the strategic importance of the Afienya project and stressed the need for an inclusive and participatory planning process involving all relevant stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation.
The Greater Accra Regional Director of LUSPA, Madam Okyere, who facilitated the meeting, explained that the technical review was an important step towards securing final approval for the Local Plan. She further noted that the proposed Afienya SEZ forms part of the broader 13,200-acre Shai-Afienya-Dawhenya Industrial Enclave and Urban Renewal Project.
Mr. Elvis Mensah of LUSPA subsequently presented the Draft Local Plan. The inputs and recommendations from the meeting will guide the next stage of the planning process, leading to consideration and approval by the relevant Spatial Planning Committees.
The exercise demonstrates the GFZA’s commitment to strategic spatial planning, stakeholder collaboration and sustainable development as it advances the establishment of the proposed Afienya SEZ. The project is expected to serve as a major catalyst for industrialization, investment, job creation and economic development.
Also present at the meeting was the Head of Estate & Zones Development, Mr. Benjamin Obeng; as well as other officers of the GFZA.
