Tema Export Processing Zone, July 2026
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Dr. Mary Awusi, on 5th July 2026, led a management team to visit the Melcom warehouse located within the Tema Export Processing Zone (EPZ) following the recent fire outbreak at the facility.
The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage, expressing the Authority’s support to the affected company, and engaging key stakeholders on measures to strengthen fire safety within the enclave.
During the visit, Dr. Awusi interacted with a representative of Melcom, Mr. Govind and the Tema Regional Fire Officer, who provided updates on the incident and the emergency response efforts.
Reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to the safety and resilience of businesses operating within the Free Zones enclave, Dr. Awusi pledged to collaborate closely with the Ghana National Fire Service to strengthen emergency preparedness and reduce response times to fire incidents within the Tema EPZ. She emphasized that improving fire response capabilities is essential to protecting investments, safeguarding lives and property, and ensuring business continuity within the Zone.
The Ghana Free Zones Authority remains committed to working with all stakeholders to strengthen safety standards and maintain a secure environment for investors and businesses operating within the Free Zones enclaves. In this regard, the Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, has launched investigations into the cause of the fire outbreak to establish its origin and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dr. Awusi was accompanied by the Director of Corporate Affairs, PR & Aftercare, Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor; Director of the Tema Office, Mr. Edward Adu-Ntiamoah; Head of Estate and Zones, Mr. Benjamin Obeng; and other officers of the Authority.
