The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) participated in the sod-cutting ceremony for the Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP), a landmark industrial development project aimed at strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading industrial hub in Africa. The ceremony, held in Tema, was graced by the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama as the Guest of Honour and brought together key stakeholders from government, industry and traditional leadership.
The Tema Integrated Industrial Park is a collaborative initiative involving the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), and Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (ARISE IIP). Spanning 83.5 hectares, the industrial park is designed to host specialised production zones focused on key sectors, including automotive, pharmaceuticals, aluminium, agro-processing, garments and textiles. The project represents a transformative vision to accelerate industrialisation, attract investment and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness within the African market.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, highlighted the critical role of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable economic growth. She described the TIIP as a major milestone in advancing Ghana’s industrialisation agenda and disclosed that Cabinet has approved four key sector policies covering Manufacturing, Agribusiness, Textiles and Pharmaceuticals. According to the Minister, these policies will serve as strategic pillars for the country’s industrial and economic transformation.
The Minister further emphasised the need for an urgent review of the Free Zones Act to support the transition of Ghana’s Free Zones Programme into a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework. She noted that this reform would position the country to maximise the benefits of integrated industrial parks, enhance investment attraction and drive export-led industrial development.
In his address, the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama underscored the importance of strategic investments in industrial infrastructure, noting that projects such as the TIIP align with Ghana’s vision of expanding local production, promoting value addition and creating sustainable employment opportunities. He explained that the industrial park would support the government’s industrialisation agenda, including the implementation of the 24-hour economy policy, by providing an enabling environment for businesses to establish, expand, and thrive.
The President further noted that the TIIP is expected to generate significant socio-economic benefits, including employment creation, skills development, technology transfer, increased foreign and domestic investment, enhanced industrial capacity and the positioning of Ghana as a preferred investment destination in Africa.
Representing the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, at the ceremony was the Director of Corporate Affairs, PR and Aftercare, Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor. The event was attended by government officials, Ministers of State, stakeholders, development partners and traditional leaders.
